About Sudbury
The City
Sudbury is a city of 157,857 and serves as the regional capital of Northeastern Ontario at the intersection of the Transcanada Highway , Highway 69 South and Highway 144 North. It is one of the largest municipalities, by area, in Canada with plenty of open space, freshwater lakes, pristine forests and woodlands, parks and recreational facilities.
Sudbury enjoys four seasons, summer, fall, winter and spring; because of this we are able to offer a vast array of festivals, events and recreational activities that can change as the seasons do.
History
Sudbury's modern history was set in the hard rock of the Canadian Shield when Prime Minister John A. MacDonald's vision of a transcontinental railroad carved its way westward and established the small settlement of Sudbury Junction in 1883. While the area's dense forests of towering pine, birch and maple attracted thousands of loggers, in the long run, Sudbury would owe its prosperity and rapid growth to the rich minerals embedded in the Sudbury Basin.
Diverse Culture
Sudbury is situated within traditional Ojibway lands, and surrounded by many First Nation communities including Whitefish Lake and Wahnapitae First Nations. Its multicultural and multilingual fabric is shaped by people of many different ethnic origins including Italian, Finnish, Polish, Chinese, Ukrainian and Croatian. It has the third largest francophone population in Canada outside of Quebec . Together, these influences make Sudbury one of Ontario's most culturally diverse centres.
Center for Education and Health
The City boasts three post-secondary institutions - Laurentian University, Cambrian College and Collège Boréal. The Sudbury Regional Hospital is one of the largest in the province. Combined with the Northeastern School of Medicine, Sudbury is the main provider of health services in northeastern Ontario.
